Bennett says he doubts state govt. would shut down

A top state official says he doesn’t think there will be a state government shutdown even if a new budget isn’t approved by the next fiscal year’s July 1 start.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett said June 17 that’s because he expects lawmakers would authorize continued spending on a temporary basis until a budget is approved. The federal government frequently resorts to that.

Bennett is a former Senate president who was appointed to his current office by Gov. Jan Brewer after she was elevated to the governorship in January.

Brewer and the Legislature are at odds over how to close a big shortfall in the next budget. Points of contention are said to be spending levels for education and social services and her proposal for a three-year sales tax increase.
