Lincoln not first to name Ariz. a territory

An article in the July 24 edition of the Capitol Times, “The curious death of the ‘Father of Arizona’”, is correctly - although incompletely - reported.

Abraham Lincoln actually was the second president to name Arizona a territory.

The first president to name Arizona a territory was Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America. He did this on Feb. 14, 1862.

The first territorial capital of Arizona was Tucson. The second, proclaimed by President Lincoln, was Prescott. The first governors of Arizona were: Lt. Col John R. Baylor (Confederacy) and John N. Goodwin (United States).
