This is the office that oversees the K-12 education system and directs the Department of Education. This officer executes policies established by the Legislature and the governor-appointed Board of Education. Fourth in line for succession to governor.
The primary for both major parties was contested. In the three-way Republican race, Sen. John Huppenthal, R-20, got a majority of votes to advance to the general election. On the Democratic side, Penny Kotterman, former president of the Arizona Education Association, defeated teacher and education consultant Jason Williams by a 2-to-1 margin.
