A spokesman for gubernatorial candidate Don Goldwater says the campaign will soon turn in enough signatures and $5 contributions to qualify for Clean Elections funding.
Currently, Mr. Goldwater has collected about 4,800 contributions and signatures, but they are being examined by the campaign committee to ensure validity, said Eric Johnson, a spokesman for Mr. Goldwater’s campaign.
“We’re just making sure the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed,” he said, adding the committee is still collecting more qualifying donations before filing them with the Secretary of State’s Office.
Candidates for governor must submit 4,200 contributions and signatures from registered voters in order to qualify for public campaign financing. Typically, candidates gather more than 5,000 to ensure they qualify if some of the contributions are invalidated.
When Mr. Goldwater qualifies, he will receive $453,849 to spend on the Sept. 12 primary election.
