They’re Democrats and Republicans. They serve on school boards and work for nonprofit groups. One is a college student. One has run for governor.
Several have law degrees. A few are lobbyists. One is a volunteer.

They are Arizona women who have decided serving the public is not only their life and livelihood, but their duty. The other attribute they share is what
novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald would describe as an “extraordinary gift for hope.”

Many of the women profiled here speak not only of having an education, but a degree of mental toughness. “It’s never personal. One’s opponent today is one’s ally tomorrow,” says one.

The profiles you see on the following pages have been written by Arizona Capitol Times staff writers Bill Coates and Don Harris. Mr. Coates also photographed many of the subjects. Capitol Times intern Samantha Sanchez penned several profiles, as did contributors Jackie Dishner and Candace Hughes.
