Treasurer set to resign

As part of a plea agreement with the Attorney General’s Office, State Treasurer David Petersen is expected to resign today.
Mr. Petersen, a Republican, pled guilty in October to one misdemeanor charge in exchange for not being prosecuted on felony charges of fraud, forgery and misappropriation of public funds, as well as a 2004 campaign finance violation.
The deal keeps Mr. Petersen out of jail, but would prohibit him from ever running for public office again and requires him to resign his current post before being sentenced. His formal sentencing is tomorrow.
Yesterday, Governor Napolitano appointed Elliott Hibbs, the former head of the Department of Revenue, as interim treasurer.
