People from the Capitol area are often spotted carting around a disposable cup of sunshine with a ubiquitous logo known round the world — the Starbucks mermaid. Connoisseurs of lattes, cappuccinos, Frappuccinos and just plain coffee don’t have far to go: the First Street Starbucks location is just a block away from best breakfast winner First Watch.
The downtown Starbucks is usually packed wall-to-wall with Capitol types, convention goers and the regular downtown crowd, all patiently waiting for their caffeine fix. Karlyn Moore, marketing manager for Starbucks, says the firm is pleased to be chosen. “We certainly appreciate their business and allowing us to become a part of their daily lives,” Ms. Moore says in a written statement.
Since Starbucks’ name was inspired by the classic book “Moby Dick,” it’s not surprising that Starbucks’ logo is a sea siren. Originally posed in full mermaidenly glory, today’s logo features only her face and hair. In fact, a commemorative 35th anniversary cup with the original siren design sparked some controversy earlier this year. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported in September that an elementary school principal in Washington state asked teachers to cover up the siren’s bare chest proudly displayed on their cups.
