Just what is the ideal session length?

The fifth-longest legislative session in Arizona history came to a close three minutes before midnight on June 21, 2006, for the House and 15 minutes later for the Senate. The session lasted 164 days, and a record number — more than 1,500 bills — were introduced.
Outgoing Senate President Ken Bennett has ended each session since 1999 with a song. Here’s a line from 2006: “We end the session. We’re way too slow, the lobbyists know.”
But what is the ideal session length? Some say 100 days or fewer. Others say 100 is not enough time to do the state’s business.
An Arizona Capitol Times article dated Jan. 22, 2000, featured then-Sen. Ruth Solomon discussing the upcoming 2000 session. A session lasting 100 days or less is “inside baseball” and doesn’t allow legislators time to make good decisions, nor does it serve voters, she said.
The 2000 legislative session finished tied for the 26th longest, at 100 days. Just under 1,300 bills were introduced.
