Business panel set to review employer sanctions law

A committee tasked with gathering input about the employer sanctions law from the business community will hold its first meeting Oct. 10.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Arizona Businesses and Illegal Immigration, created by House Speaker Jim Weiers and comprised mostly of representatives from the business community, will make recommendations for legislative action on improvements to the sanctions law.

Beginning in 2008, all Arizona employers will have to use the federal E-Verify online employee verification program to ensure only legal workers are hired. Businesses that knowingly or intentionally hire illegal immigrants face a suspension or revocation of their business licenses.

The committee, which is expected to take public testimony, will meet at 1 p.m. in House Hearing Room 4. The meeting will also be broadcast on the Legislature’s Web site, www.azleg.gov.
