A day before the 66th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Rep. Harry Mitchell, a Tempe Democrat, issued a letter to U.S. Navy Secretary Donald Winter requesting the name Arizona once again be used on a Naval vessel. Mitchell asked that a new aircraft carrier, construction on which is slated to begin in 2012, be designated the USS Arizona, the first time the name would be used since the battleship was sunk in Hawaii.
Rep. Steve Gallardo, D-13, was chosen to serve on the National Labor Caucus of State Legislators’ Advisory Council. The caucus is a bi-partisan network of union members and union-friendly state lawmakers.
All flags at state buildings will be flown at half staff Saturday, Dec. 8, in honor of Silvestre Herrera, a Glendale resident and Medal of Honor recipient who passed away Nov. 26. Herrera was the first Arizona resident to receive the nation’s highest military honor during World War II.
