Awards
• At its recent annual meeting, the Arizona Wildlife Federation (AWF) recognized the following seven individuals and groups who have distinguished themselves by “their commitment to Arizona’s wildlife and habitat, and to the conservation ethic.”
AWF Conservation Award winners:
Henry Provencio Government Agency Conservation Champion Award, Coconino National Forest
Smitha Ramakrishna, Youth Conservation Award
John Toner, Conservation Volunteer Award
Arizona Elk Society, Conservation Organization of the Year Award
L.V. Yates, Thomas E. McCullough Memorial Award (Citizens)
Rep. Jerry Weiers, Thomas E. McCullough Memorial Award (Professional)
Pete Cimellaro, Patti Ho Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award
The Federation also elected the following seven individuals to serve on its executive committee:
Ryna Rock, Camp Verde, president
Brad Powell, Payson, vice president of conservation
Jim Unmacht, Glendale, vice president of operations
Jerry Thorson, Mesa, treasurer
Don Hoffman, Alpine, director/secretary
Tony Bossart, Scottsdale, director
Meg Buchanan, Tucson, National Wildlife Federation representative
• Laurie Roberts, a columnist with The Arizona Republic, will be honored Sept. 6 with a Sunshine Award by the Society of Professional Journalists, recognizing her for “important contributions in the area of open government.”
In the spring of 2007, Roberts questioned the unusual secrecy surrounding a CPS case involving the deaths of the children in Tucson. Her inquiries spurred The Republic and the Arizona Daily Star to file lawsuits requesting the release of the case files.
The Republic eventually won the lawsuit.
Education
• The Phoenix School of Law on July 30 announced the appointment of the following 12 adjunct professors for the fall semester:
Mark Armstrong, a retired judge who works with the Arizona Supreme Court, will teach Con Law II.
Colin Campbell, a retired judge and attorney with Osborn Maledon, will teach Remedies.
Kim DeMarchi, a partner at Lewis and Roca, will teach Professional Responsibility.
Murray Henner, an adjunct at Phoenix School of Law last year, is returning to teach International Law.
Anne Hobart, who taught Alternative Dispute Resolution last year and led an externship seminar this summer, will return to teach Civil Rights.
Mike Jones, a judge with Maricopa County Superior Court, will teach LP.
Alan Kuffner, a practicing attorney with the law firm of Bustamante & Kuffner, P.C., will teach Juvenile Law.
Tanya Lee, an associate with Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP, will teach Business Associations.
Josh McClatchey, an attorney at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, will teach Contracts II.
Nancy Jo Merritt, who practices solely in the areas of immigration and nationality law at Fennemore Craig PC, will teach Immigration Law.
Angelo Patane, a lawyer with Koplow & Patane PLLC, will teach an Externship course.
Richard Trujillo, a judge with Maricopa County Superior Court, will teach LP II.
Arts
• Jessica Andrews, executive director of Arizona Theatre Company, has been elected 2008-09 fiscal year president of the Arizona Citizens for the Arts, a statewide arts advocacy organization.
The group also elected the following nine new board members:
