TUCSON – Gov. Janet Napolitano's new job as homeland security secretary will come with a big pay raise.
Napolitano will make $191,300 if confirmed by the Senate as a member of president-elect Barack Obama's cabinet next month. Her current salary as governor is just $95,000.
But Napolitano will also see a big increase in expenses. She's going to have to either buy or rent in the Washington area, where housing prices are 116 percent higher than where she now lives in downtown Phoenix. Napolitano needs at least $130,000 in her new job just to break even with her Arizona salary.
