Gov. Jan Brewer has called a special session to allow lawmakers a chance to pass legislation that would create a school scholarship program for children in foster homes and children with disabilities, according to a press release sent May 20 by the Governor's Office.
Brewer announced the special session will begin at 1 p.m. today. to It will be the second special session this year.
Last week, some Republican lawmakers said they wanted Brewer to call a special session so they could find a new way to create a scholarship program after the courts shot down the school voucher programs that serve foster and disabled children.
The Arizona Supreme Court decided recently that the voucher programs were unconstitutional in the case Cain v. Horne. About 500 children were enrolled in the voucher programs.
"Legislative leaders and I have developed a proposal that will meet the legal requirements of the Arizona Constitution, does not add additional costs to the state budget and allows those parents to utilize the best educational programs for their disabled and foster children," Brewer stated in a press release.
