Treasurer Martin’s wife dies after childbirth

Kerry Martin, the wife of state Treasurer Dean Martin, died on Memorial Day due to complications from childbirth, according to the Treasurer’s Office.

Kerry, 34, died the evening of May 25 after giving birth to the couple’s son, Austin Michael Martin. The baby was in “grave condition,” according to a statement sent the next day by the Treasurer’s Office. On May 27, a Treasurer’s Office spokeswoman said the baby’s condition had not improved.

The treasurer and his family are standing vigil at his newborn son’s bedside. The couple had been married for 13 years.

“Dean and his family ask that you join him in prayer for his son’s health,” according to the press statement.

Gov. Jan Brewer issued a statement, saying “Kerry was a kind, hardworking eternally optimistic young lady – a tremendous leader in her own right.”

Kerry is survived by her father Edward Mabey, her aunt Phyllis Pulice, her sister Tracy Smitherman, her brother John Mabey, a niece and two nephews. Funeral arrangements for Kerry are pending.

The family asks that no cards or flowers be sent at this time, though notes of encouragement can be sent to the treasurer at dean@americanvisuals.com.
