Kerry Martin, the wife of state Treasurer Dean Martin, died due to a ruptured tumor in her liver.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office said a hepatic adenoma, a type of rare benign tumor of the liver, ruptured during childbirth on May 25, causing massive internal bleeding, according to the Yellow Sheet Report. The Martins’ newborn son, Austin Michael Martin, died two days later.
Martin on May 29 announced that funeral services for Kerry and Austin will be June 3 at 1:30 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 11001 N. 40th St. in Phoenix. Visitation for the mother and child will be June 2, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary and Memorial Park, 6500 E. Bell Rd. in Scottsdale. Both are open to the public.
Martin also announced the Martin Family Charitable Foundation, which was established in Kerry and Austin’s memories. The foundation will support causes important to Kerry, such as financial literacy and water-safety education, Martin said in a statement. Donations to the foundation can be made at any Chase Bank or Washington Mutual branch.
“During her joyous pregnancy she had many ideas on charitable efforts she wanted to champion as a new mother. The foundation will also help expectant mothers, both in healthcare and education, based on ideas Kerry had and the experiences we shared during her pregnancy,” Martin noted.
The family requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to the foundation. Memories of Kerry and notes of encouragement for the family can be sent to the treasurer at firstname.lastname@example.org
