Rules panel approves sales-tax referral

The Senate Rules Committee finally approved a measure to allow voters to decide whether to increase the state sales tax by 1 cent.

Senate President Bob Burns convened the committee, which he chairs, about 8 p.m. June 29. Burns was the only who could be heard voting “aye” on the measure, but no one challenged him when he said the motion to approve it had passed.

All measures must be approved by the Rules Committee before moving to the floor for a debate and a vote by the full chamber.

The Rules Committee had voted down SCR1046 a few hours before. The bill initially failed after division was called, and Burns was the only senator who voted in favor of the measure.

At the time the measure passed, less than four hours remained until the fiscal deadline.
