Lobbyists and other interested observers are all speculating on what Gov. Jan Brewer might do. One onlooker, who asked not to be identified, said the Governor’s Office, in particular, is keeping mum: “Even the [staffers] who will say, ‘Hello,’ to you are choosing not to say anything. They’re keeping it close to the vest. I would do the same if I was in their shoes.”
Meanwhile, Marty Shultz told our reporter he would advise Brewer to sign the equalization repeal, but not the rest of the budget – or at least not all of it – in order to maintain leverage to pursue the sales tax increase she has clearly demonstrated is of utmost importance to her. “I think the governor should continue to pursue [the referral], if possible. I do think it’s the right thing to do,” he said.
