Rep. Nancy Barto, who is not termed until 2012, has opened an exploratory committee for the District 7 Senate seat currently held by Sen. Jim Waring, who is term-limited next year. Rep. Ray Barnes, who like Waring is termed in 2010, opened a Senate exploratory committee back in February. Waring would not comment on an ensuing primary battle between his seatmates. He himself filed an exploratory for the House last month, although he seems ambivalent about staying at the Legislature. He has expressed interest in running for the CD-3 seat should U.S. Rep. John Shadegg retire, and while many observers think Shadegg will not run next year, Waring says he believes Shadegg will run in 2010.
As for his own plans, he told our reporter today (Aug. 28) “I am still leaning, frankly, against running, but, you know, if I don’t go ahead and start raising some money fairly soon, then the decision will be made for me, because you can’t do it during session. January will be here before I know it.” Waring said he opened the exploratory committee to keep the option open. “I can honestly say I just have not made a decision of my own mind yet.”
