With three days left until the governor needs to act on the budget, Sen. Jorge Luis Garcia, Sen. President Bob Burns and Gov. Jan Brewer met again this morning on the ninth floor to discuss a proposal laid out by Senate Democrats. Garcia tells us that the proposal is something that he and Democratic members of Senate Appropriations had come up with during the special session and previously offered to Burns. But Garcia wouldn’t provide details, only to say that from his perspective, it is definitely better for the state than the GOP plan on Brewer’s desk.
As for this morning’s meeting, Garcia said “it was more to talk about where we were at and how we are going to get to the finish line.” When asked what the governor said about it, Garcia said: “On Monday she was optimistic… Ultimately, it is whether or not the legislative caucuses can agree.” Still, Democratic senators emerged from afternoon small group meetings saying that there was no deal with Brewer.
