Brewer names Tyne to head up Weights and Measures

A game of state agency musical chairs is bringing Kevin Tyne back into Gov. Jan Brewer’s official orbit.

Brewer on Feb. 11 named Tyne, her longtime adviser and former chief of staff, as the new director of the Department of Weights and Measures. Tyne replaces Gene Palma, who will replace Bob Barger as head of the Fire, Building and Life Safety Department. Barger, in turn, will replace the retiring Phil Mele as Arizona state fire marshal.

Tyne resigned in October as Brewer’s chief of staff after months of criticism over his handling of the position. But he didn’t stray far, moving to a position on the Republican Governors Association’s Arizona team, which could have given him a direct role in Brewer’s campaign, though the association said it is staying neutral in the GOP’s contested gubernatorial primary.

“I am very pleased to have these well known and highly experienced administrators as members of my cabinet,” Brewer said in a press release.
