Burns says Brewer has to work on tax package

Senate President Bob Burns says the next move on a package of proposed business tax cuts and tax breaks for creating jobs is now up to Gov. Jan Brewer and her staff.

Brewer has presented lawmakers with a counteroffer that would dramatically scale back House Republicans’ package to slash its projected loss in state revenue.

Burns on Wednesday said it’s now up to the governor’s office to work with lawmakers to see whether her approach can gain enough support.

Supporters of the package says it’s need to boost the state’s economy by encouraging business expansion and relocations to create jobs in the state. Critics cite the resulting upfront of revenue and some say it amounts to a corporate giveaway.
