Brewer asks Obama for more funding, aerial support on border

Once again, Gov. Jan Brewer is requesting more assistance from the White House to deal with illegal immigration and drug trafficking on the Arizona-Mexico border.

In a May 20 letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer asked for OH-58 Kiowa helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance missions along the border, as well as for more funding for an anti-drug trafficking task force. More aerial surveillance and increased funding for the Joint Counter-Narco Terrorism Task Force were both parts of the border security plan Brewer unveiled in April.

Brewer said the Kiowa helicopter is ideal for aerial surveillance, but said the Arizona National Guard has only four available. Nine others are reserved for national training activities.

“It seems reasonable to ask that serious consideration be given to reallocating at least some OH-58s to the border states,” wrote Brewer, who included with her letter a map of all Kiowas that are on hand in the United States.

Brewer included copies of several previous letters she had written to Obama starting in 2009.

While speaking to FOX News’ Greta Van Susteren later in the day, Brewer bemoaned the lack of response she’s received from Obama and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, her predecessor as governor.

“I have repeatedly sent letters to the administration and to the president of the United States with absolutely no response,” Brewer said. “Absolutely nothing.”
