Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain had a terse exchange over border security in a Wednesday hearing on terrorism threats.
McCain, R-Ariz., questioned Napolitano’s effectiveness at securing the border and enforcing immigration laws. Napolitano said illegal immigration is down and drug and gun seizures are up.
McCain suggested bringing Cochise County, Ariz. Sheriff Larry Deaver and other “sheriffs Secretary Napolitano says she’s in contact with and … they’ll tell you they have not seen improvement.”
Napolitano countered with names of other Arizona sheriffs who should also testify.
“Let’s get them all up here. Let’s get them all up here. Not just one,” she said talking over McCain.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., ended the exchange by moving from McCain to Republican Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown.
