Illegal immigrant shot by MCSO deputy dies

An illegal immigrant shot after allegedly pointing an assault rifle at a Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy has died.

Authorities say 43-year-old Felipe Ramirez Castellanos died Monday at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. He was shot late Friday night outside a home in east Mesa.

Sheriff’s officials say Castellanos was shot once in the head and once in the hip after he pointed an AK-47 at a deputy responding to a domestic violence incident.

The Arizona Republic says Castellanos served 90 days in jail for a human-smuggling charge in 1986.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the 26-year-old deputy has been with MCSO five years. Arpaio won’t identify the deputy but says he’s been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Arpaio also says the deputy took “proper, professional action.”
