Ariz. cuts for education, health care face hearing

The state Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday holds a hearing likely to center on controversial funding cuts proposed by Gov. Jan Brewer to help balance the next state budget.

The committee will be briefed on Brewer’s proposal to cut universities’ state funding and to reduce Medicaid enrollment, both by roughly a fifth.

The Medicaid portion of the hearing also could feature discussion on a separate controversial cut .That was the elimination in the current state budget approved last year of coverage for some medical transplants.

While the transplant cuts have already been implemented, Brewer’s proposal to drop eligibility for 280,000 people from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System depends on the state obtaining a waiver requested from the federal government.
