Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is saying no to those who want her to run for the Senate.

A spokesman says Napolitano told Democratic leaders this week that she won’t put her name forward for the open Senate seat in Arizona in 2012. Spokesman Sean Smith said Friday that Napolitano wants to keep working in President Barack Obama’s administration.

Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, a three-term conservative, is retiring from the seat and Democrats are looking for a candidate.

Napolitano is the former governor of Arizona and was seen as one of the Democrats’ top recruits as they look to defend their majority in the Senate.

Twenty-one of the 33 Senate seats up in 2012 are held by Democrats and two others are occupied by independents who align themselves with Democrats.
