Arizona unemployment rate at 9.6 percent in January

The latest Arizona unemployment report puts the state’s jobless rate for January at 9.6 percent.

That’s also the newly recalculated rate for December. The December rate before a routine annual benchmarking process had been reported at 9.4 percent.

The Department of Commerce says Arizona lost 45,700 jobs in January. The department calls that number relatively low in comparison with January losses in recent years during the recession.

The biggest job losses in January were in professional and business services, and the department says most were likely due to post-holiday season reductions in temporary positions in retail trade. Direct employment in retail trade also was down.
