Approximately 200 students chanted and gathered outside the Senate building on Friday.
Some carried signs saying “We have rights” and “Education not deportation.”
The protest is occurring on a day when the Legislature isn’t in session and about a week after a Senate committee narrowly endorsed a new bill sponsored by the senator who championed the state’s immigration enforcement law last year.
The group was addressed by Democratic Sen. Steve Gallardo of Phoenix.
Then the protesters began marching in a circle in the plaza between the House and Senate buildings.
A police helicopter hovered above as eight Department of Public Safety officers arrived to bolster security.
