Sheriff Paul Babeu is pushing the state to give Pinal County $5 million for fighting drug smugglers.

Babeu told Pima County Republicans Tuesday he needs the cash for a helicopter, ground-based radar, armored vehicles and rifles to arm his people and fight drug cartels.

The Arizona Daily Star reports a spending request on border security is set for a hearing Thursday in the state Senate.
