Leadership awaits Brewer counterproposal

After a day of budget negotiations, House and Senate Republican leaders are awaiting a counterproposal from Gov. Jan Brewer.

Brewer met Monday morning with House Speaker Kirk Adams, House Appropriations Chairman John Kavanagh, Senate President Russell Pearce and Senate Appropriations Chairman Andy Biggs, all of whom were absent from their afternoon respective floor sessions in the Legislature.

The four lawmakers were back in the executive tower in the afternoon, waiting for Brewer’s response to their morning discussions. Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson wouldn’t discuss details of the negotiations, but said the governor was crafting a response to the proposal leadership pitched to her in their morning negotiations.

“They’re looking for a follow-up to what was discussed this morning,” Benson said.

The Senate passed a budget two weeks ago that cut $346 million more than the governor proposed in her budget plan in January, and is pushing for deeper cuts in K-12 education and Medicaid than Brewer wants. The House has not yet acted on the Senate budget, and is still negotiation with both the Senate and Governor’s Office.
