Arizona budget problems could snag legislation to provide Pinal County with $5 million to fight drug smugglers.

Sheriff Paul Babeu says he would use the money for equipment such as a helicopter, rifles and ground-based radar.

A Senate committee has endorsed the House-approved bill to take the money from the photo radar fund.

But Republican senators were told Wednesday that the photo radar fund only has $1.4 million and that several other bills aim to spend that money for other purposes.

Appropriations Chairman Andy Biggs says that likely means the Pinal County money would have to come from the state’s General Fund.

The General Fund already has a projected shortfall, so Republican Sen. Linda Gray of Glendale says that should put a roadblock in front of the Pinal County bill.
