Brewer has until Monday to act on gun bill

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has until Monday to act on a bill that would permit carrying guns on public rights of way at Arizona public university and community college campuses.

Brewer received the bill Tuesday from the Senate following completion of legislative action by the House last week.

The bill now applies only to rights of way though it originally would have allowed people with concealed weapons permits to carry weapons inside campus buildings, including classrooms.

The bill doesn’t define rights of way, but a legislative supporter said during debate that it would apply to campus streets and adjacent sidewalks.

The bill is backed by gun-rights advocates and opposed by university officials.
