The chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will not schedule a public hearing into nearly $100 million of misspent jail funds within the sheriff’s office.

Supervisor Andy Kunasek of Paradise Valley tells The Arizona Republic he doesn’t think a public hearing would accomplish anything.

The county Office of Management and Budget says sheriff’s officials misappropriated $99.5 million in restricted jail funds over the last eight years. Budget officials said nearly $85 million from the sheriff’s detention fund and nearly $15 million in inmate-services money was misspent.

Sheriff’s officials have acknowledged the money was misspent. They said that as employees were transferred around the agency, payroll records were not always updated and that created budgetary issues that will have to be confronted.

It’s not clear how the money will be paid back.

  1. Really, no public hearing on how 99.5 MILLION dollars was misspent by the Sheriff’s office? Time for Andy Kunasek to be recalled because that mis-management in any other state would be grounds for an investigation and criminal charges!
