A committee seeking to force a recall election for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has filed signature petitions, but they reportedly fall far short of the number needed.

Secretary of State spokesman Matt Roberts says the Committee to Recall Arizona Governor Jan Brewer late Friday filed what it said are petitions bearing 37,500 signatures.

The group needed to file 432,021 voter signatures to force an election.

Roberts says the Secretary of State’s Office will review the petition to verify the number of signatures.

Saturday was the deadline to file petitions for the campaign launched on Jan. 28.
