Rep. Gabrielle Giffords plans to spend much of her birthday working on her rehab regimen.

The congresswoman, who has been in a Houston rehab hospital recovering from a gunshot wound, will turn 41 on Wednesday.

Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin says there might be a small birthday celebration.

Family and friends threw a small party complete with a cake for Giffords over the weekend.

The low-key affair stands in contrast to her birthday last year, when her husband brought Giffords to a trail near Tucson for a hike.

Once at the trail, she found a surprise party with her friends, family and a mariachi band.

Giffords has been in the rehab hospital for more than four months.
