A veteran Republican politician and state government official is joining Gov. Jan Brewer’s administration as the state’s new top tax collector.

Brewer on Monday announced her appointment of attorney John Greene as director of the Department of Revenue.

Greene is a former legislator who served as Senate president for four years in the 1990s. He later served as state insurance director and as chairman of a state tax appeals board. Greene is currently chief deputy treasurer for Maricopa County.

Greene will replace current Revenue Director Gale Garriott. He steps down June 29.
