McCain ‘puzzled’ by anger over wildfire remark

Sen. John McCain says he’s “puzzled” that there’s a controversy surrounding remarks he made suggesting illegal immigrants were responsible for some of the massive wildfire in eastern Arizona.

McCain tells NBC’s “Today” show all he was doing was repeating information he’d been given by federal officials at a briefing that occurred before he appeared at a news conference last weekend.

McCain said in an interviewTuesday, “We all know that people who come across our border illegally … that these fires are sometimes, some of them, caused by this.” He said “I’m puzzled .. that there should be any controversy.”

McCain earlier had said that illegal immigrants “have set fires because they wanted to signal others … and they have set fires because they wanted to divert law enforcement agents.”

  1. Senator McCain is a seasoned politician and should only be stating facts. He has no facts that we are aware of that an “illegal” anyone set those fires. McCain needs to be more responsibile and also accountable for the remarks he makes in the media. If he is puzzled it is only because he made a statement with no facts. Playing this card is getting old and blaming immigrants for everything wrong with our state is not responsible. We expect and deserve more from Senator McCain.

  2. Senator McCain is reckless just like many Republicans these days. I understand that there is evidence that ONE of the fires was caused by a camp fire…but the federal agency that knows the best says there is not substantial evidence to support McCain’s claims. To blame an ethnic group and the sequence of events resulting in the fire at this point of the investigation just shows McCain’s “true color”.
