Arpaio to pay $200K in racial profiling case

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has settled a claim with two men and will pay $200,000 in a racial profiling case.
The claim arose out of one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s worksite enforcement raids. Deputies raided a landscaping company in search of identity-theft and fraud suspects.
Julian and Julio Mora were pulled over outside the business on Feb. 11, 2009.
The men later contended they were targeted because of their race. One is a U.S. citizen and the other is a legal resident.
Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona tell The Arizona Republic the settlement should send a message to police agencies that engage in discriminatory practices.
A Sheriff’s Office attorney says they could not identify the deputies who made the stop because of the number of deputies working the operation.
