Gov. Jan Brewer travels to eastern Arizona on Wednesday to show support for the tourism-dependent region in the wake of this summer’s Wallow fire.

Brewer’s office says the governor will be briefed from county officials on recovery efforts and participate in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the Big Lake general store.

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says officials are trying to get out the message that the White Mountains are open for business and that large areas of the region were untouched by the fire.

The hope, according to Benson, is that “people should come up and spend their money.”

  1. That would, of course, assume people have any money to spend in a state that has done nothing to address joblessness other than cut-off unemployment benefits. Employment rates going up in most states, but are down in Arizona. It’s a sign of lack of leadership and too much time spent on divisive issues like SB1070 that have done nothing to address the real problem.
