Flagstaff on track for zero murders in 2011

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff police say there hasn’t been a single murder in the city this year.

If that holds true through December, it will be the first year since at least 1967 that a murder hadn’t been committed in the mountain city.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff logged six murders in 2010 — the highest annual number in 15 years.

But the police department’s 2010 yearly crime report released this fall shows that rates of violent crime overall have fallen over the past five years.

While no murders have occurred in Flagstaff so far this year, that’s not the case in Coconino County.

In one case, authorities say three people were killed in an apparent murder-suicide at a motorcycle rally about 35 miles southeast of Flagstaff in July.
