Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has announced his candidacy for Republican nomination for the 4th Congressional District seat.

The first-term sheriff made the announcement Wednesday.

Babeu says he plans to focus on illegal immigration, high unemployment and the federal deficit.

The 4th District includes most of Mohave and Yavapai counties and some outlying parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Republican State Sen. Ron Gould of Lake Havasu City is exploring a possible candidacy for the 4th District seat.

Republican U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar also may run for the 4th District seat instead of the adjacent 1st Congressional District that includes his current home in Flagstaff.
