Arizona’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is holding at 8.7 percent despite the loss of 3,000 jobs in December.
The Department of Administration’s monthly unemployment report says Arizona’s December job loss is unusual and only the second time a December recorded a loss in jobs.
The department says the month’s loss resulted from above-average losses in government jobs even as the private sector notched an above-average gain.
Five of the 11 major economic sectors added jobs in December while six lost jobs.
Losses in public education accounted for most of the 7,000 jobs lost in government, the sector with the biggest loss. Construction lost 2,100 jobs.
Professional and Business Services was the sector with the biggest gain, an increase of 4,000 jobs.
