Deadline set for talks in Arpaio’s rights case

An April 14 deadline has been set for lawyers for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the U.S. Department of Justice to complete their attempt to resolve allegations that the sheriff’s office has committed a wide range of civil rights violations.

The Justice Department released a report in mid-December that accused Arpaio’s office of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration enforcement on racially charged citizen complaints and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.

The sheriff has denied the allegations and called the report a politically motivated attack by the Obama administration.

A Monday meeting between attorneys on both sides marks the first settlement talks since the Justice Department released its findings. The department wants Arpaio’s office to change its policies and incorporate more training.

  1. In meeting with Sheriff’s SVU unit regarding the 432 sex crime cases, it would be appropriate to look into the racial makeup of these cases to see if there was disparity in their mishandling. We know that there were no Spanish speakers in the SVU unit except one and all cases of “Latino” language investigations were sent to her. While SVU has now brought on new investigators to the unit and discharged (or they resigned) it would be appropriate to have this cultural dexterity in the unit. SVU uses ChildHelp to do a lot of their work, but does ChildHelp have cultural dexterity too? This lack of SVU capacity impacts how or if cases are investigated and should be taken seriously.
