BLM to hold meetings on renewable energy proposals

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is holding a series of public meetings across Arizona on proposals for renewable energy development.

Three meetings are scheduled next week in Phoenix, Flagstaff and Kingman. Two others are scheduled in Yuma and Tucson next month.

The BLM has proposed setting aside land close to utility corridors and existing transmission lines that is suitable for wind or solar energy projects. The agency says its focus is on previously disturbed sites and land with low resource sensitivity and few environmental conflicts.

The BLM says more than 237,000 acres of land it manages in Arizona meets those criteria.

The agency is accepting comments on a draft environmental impact statement through May 16. The final document is expected to be released later this year.
