A group has filed petitions aimed at banning all new billboards in Phoenix.

The leader of Save Phoenix Views says he turned in more than 33,000 signatures with the city clerk’s office Tuesday.

The Arizona Republic says Save Phoenix Views needs 25,480 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The clerk’s office has 35 working days to validate the signatures. If enough signatures are validated, the City Council would have 25 days to set a date for a special election or allow the initiative to become law.

Save Phoenix Views was formed last November as a committee completed work on revising the city’s 1986 billboard ordinance to reflect the new technology of digital signs.

Digital signs can change message 15 times every two minutes.
