The Arizona Republic reports Glendale officials are preparing for a $35 million shortfall in its general operating budget with nearly 50 layoffs, slashed services and a sales-tax hike.
Officials are proposing an increase that would take the city sales tax to nearly 3 percent, one of the highest in the area.
Glendale also plans to raise bed and property taxes.
Some residents say sports ventures such as retaining the Phoenix Coyotes have drained the city’s general fund.
Councilwoman Joyce Clark says she is among the supporters who believe a sports-and-entertainment district will help generate more tax revenue.
