Maricopa County will hire outside counsel to defend itself in the U.S. Department of Justice’s racial-profiling lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The county is named as one of three defendants in the suit filed May 10. The Justice Department is accusing sheriff’s deputies of discriminating against Latino residents.
The Arizona Republic says the county Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Wednesday to hire outside counsel.
County Attorney Bill Montgomery says the outside counsel have expertise in high-profile, complex lawsuits involving the federal government.
The County Attorney’s Office would manage them and have oversight and give periodic updates about status and costs to the board.
