Arpaio critics to hold rally outside Tent City

Critics of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will hold a rally on June 23 to call for the closure of his complex of canvas jail tents.

B. Loewe, a spokesman for organizers of the rally, says more than 1,000 people were expected to attend the protest over conditions in Arpaio’s “Tent City.”

Early in his tenure as sheriff, Arpaio won points with voters for housing inmates in tents during Phoenix’s triple-digit summer heat.

Critics say conditions in Arpaio’s jail tents are inhumane.

Arpaio has said he doesn’t see any problems with housing inmates in tents and is fond of pointing out that members of the U.S. military live in tents.

  1. I do agree that military live in tents in sweltering heat, and although that isnt good, they are trained for it. Prisoners are not. They got rid of “chain gangs”. They should get rid of the tents too. I can see both sides. The tents should be one of many deterrents to going to prison. If you dont want to live in a tent in sweltering heat, dont commit crimes and get sent to prison. BUt because of many other issues, I feel that Joe Arpaio and Jan Brewer should get married, live in one of his tents wearing the pink underwear he assigns the prisoners, and drink their stupid alcoholic butts to death. They’re both unreal!!!!!

  2. There is a very important lesson to be learned by being in TENT CITY in the
summer, and that is—–NO CRIME-NO TIME

  3. i server in afgangistian and we had ac in the tent and they wehre not expsoed the the elimets liek they are try to say over seas
