Many Republicans view Obama’s new policy as a politically calculated maneuver to solidify his support among Hispanic voters. While that almost certainly was a consideration for the president, the announcement hews closely to the administration’s previous decisions about immigration enforcement and shouldn’t come as a much of a surprise.
