Testimony set to end in Arpaio racial profiling trial

Protesters gather outside the Sandra Day O'Connor Federel Courthouse Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 in Phoenix. A Maricopa County sheriff deputy will testify Wednesday about his part in a 2008 traffic stop that's at the center of a trial aimed at settling allegations over whether Latino's are racial profiled in the immigration patrols launched by the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America. Testimony is set to end Thursday at a trial aimed at settling allegations over whether Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office racially profiles Latinos in its immigration patrols.

Witnesses at the trial have included Arpaio, Latino motorists who said they were targeted in traffic stops because of their race and deputies who denied using race as a factor in pulling over drivers.

Lawyers will make their closing arguments by filing briefs.

A group of Latinos who brought the civil case against the sheriff’s office says Arpaio’s deputies pulled over some vehicles only to make immigration status checks.

Arpaio has denies the racial profiling allegations and says deputies only stop people when they think a crime has been committed.

It’s unknown when U.S. District Judge Murray Snow will issue his ruling.

  1. Racial profiling helps to keep Big Business raking in Millions upon Millions of taxpayer dollars. Policing for profit has distorted our Judicial Process and Court Systems, making them tools for Wall Street without citizens’ best interests at mind. You can read about how private companies and crooked politicians have turned our Police forces on their ear in every attempt to squeeze money out of the general public at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-privatized-police-state.html
